Relocation & Retirement

Greenville and Pitt County are showing up on radar screens across North Carolina and the United States in recent years for many people interested in relocating or retiring. This is due to Greenville and Pitt County receiving several top recognitions by national publications in categories such as best places for manufacturing, top labor force, best small places for businesses and careers, best performing small metros, Sportstown USA, Playful City USA, and others.

In 2014, Greenville was included in USA WEEKEND Travel’s list of 5 Great, Lesser-Known Places to Retire, and the neighboring Pitt County town of Winterville was designated a Certified Retirement Community by Retire NC for providing amenities, services, and opportunities retirees need to enjoy active and productive lives.

Greenville, the county seat, has grown into a thriving small metropolitan city of over 90,000, with Pitt County at a population of nearly 175,000. Greenville has direct four-lane highway access from all NC borders and five daily direct flights to Charlotte. Greenville and Pitt County also offer an assortment of leisure and culture to explore and enjoy from greenways, parks, rivers, golf courses, historic towns, wonderful restaurants, museums, galleries, antique shops, boutiques, sports events, and much more. Our close proximity to the Outer Banks and Crystal Coast for day trips makes our area attractive to those wanting to be close to the beaches, but also have the protection from hurricanes of a more inland destination. Geographic location, easy affordability, and a mild climate in which to enjoy outdoor activities year-round, make Greenville and Pitt County a repeat choice for travelers and many are enticed to come back and stay.

There are other elements present in our area that also make it inherently attractive, helping Greenville emerge as a thriving university-medical community, and an economic and cultural hub in Eastern North Carolina. Two anchor assets in the area include East Carolina University and Vidant Medical Center.

ECU is the third largest university in North Carolina, and is a nationally recognized doctoral research institution offering a wide range of graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as the Brody School of Medicine. In addition to being the home of Pirate athletics, ECU hosts numerous performances and exhibitions showcasing the talent of both world-famous entertainers and aspiring student artists.

Vidant Health represents one of the largest health care systems in the state, and along with the ECU’s Brody School of Medicine ranks as one of the best in the emerging fields of telemedicine and robotic surgery. The system includes Vidant Medical Center, eight community hospitals, physician practices, home health and other independently operated health services.

But, perhaps one of the most common attributes people mention when visiting Greenville and Pitt County is the friendliness of our people. While possessing a wealth of big-city amenities, we still retain a certain small-town charm, Southern hospitality, and sense of community that will ensure you find yourself in good company.
